Meet Dr. Zakula
Dr. Michael Zakula is committed to treating each patient on a personal and individualized basis in the same way he would like to have a member of his own family cared for. As a father of two, he understands the challenges that children and teens face in their growing years. He also understands the pressures that adults face in their day-to-day lives.
Friendly and down-to-earth, he provides orthodontic care known for gentle clinical delivery that works toward an end result that pleases both patients and family. Whether working with a child who needs reassuring or an adult who wants a very thorough explanation of every detail of their treatment, his engaged and caring approach is there. A native of Buhl, Minnesota, Dr. Zakula spent two years at Hibbing Community College and progressed to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. After receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1976, he spent two years serving as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where he developed a love for orthodontics. This led to a two-year orthodontic residency at Emory University School of Dentistry in Atlanta, Georgia studying dentofacial orthopedics, comprehensive, and surgically assisted orthodontics. Upon completion of his residency in 1980, Dr. Zakula set up his specialty orthodontic practice in Hibbing, Minnesota where he continues to provide care to patients in this rural region that he loves.
Added areas of interest in his practice are cleft palate treatment and TMJ dysfunction. He has served as an orthodontic consultant for the Crippled Children’s Cleft Palate clinic in Duluth, Minnesota, since 1985, is an Assistant Professor for the University of Minnesota’s Department of Preventative Services, and participates in the national Smiles Change Lives program aimed at delivering orthodontic care to disadvantaged children while providing orthodontic care in his private practice.
Dr. Zakula’s long term commitment to organized dentistry has included serving as the President of the North East District Dental Society, Chair of the State Dental Education Committee, Delegate to the American Dental Association (ADA) House of Delegates, Member of the Minnesota Dental Association (MDA) State Legislative Committee, board member of the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists Executive Board, and current progression through the leadership ladder of the MDA. He has been a strong advocate for education at all levels, providing lectures to dental colleagues at MDA Star of the North meetings and to students at the Hibbing Community College Dental Assisting Program. Dr. Zakula has been awarded a fellowship in the American College of Dentists and has served on the Hibbing Community College Foundation, Suzuki Institute of Music and Performing Arts Board, and the Hibbing School District Superintendent’s Focus Group.
Dr. Zakula views continuing education to be an essential part of his professional practice and participates in orthodontic and dental education courses regularly. His professional memberships include American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), Midwestern Society of Orthodontists, Minnesota Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, and North East District Dental Society. Active participation in these organizations coupled with ongoing continuing education allows him to provide treatment that utilizes the most advanced techniques that yield high-end results for his patients. These activities also improve communication with patients’ family dentists.
In addition to practicing orthodontics and following his patients’ involvement in school athletics/extracurricular events and community service, Dr. Zakula is an avid sportsman and loves to fish, hunt, and kayak.
